Naturopathy is here at Cutting Edge

In an earlier blog post, we introduced Henry Malus, our in-house Naturopathic Doctor.

We then realized, not many people probably know what Naturopathic medicine is.

So with the help of Dr. Malus himself, we decided that we would break it down for you and also give you a pricing list of all that Dr. Malus offers!

First off, what is the world is Naturopathic Medicine?

Simply put, it’s a way to let your body heal itself using natural remedies such as vitamins, herbs, special diets, massages, etc.

According to the AANP (The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians), Naturopathic medicine is both a system and a philosophy guided by a set of principles:

Vis Medicatrix Naturae: The healing power of nature.

Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in the person in which is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment the inherent self-healing process.

Tolle Causam: Identify and treat the causes.

The Naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

Primum Non Nocere: First do no harm.

Naturopathic physicians follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:

  • Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat,
  • Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms,
  • Acknowledge, respect and work with the individuals self-healing process.
Docere: Doctor as teacher.

Naturopathic physicians educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.

Treat the whole person.
Take into account individual physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, genetic, environmental, social and other factors.
Prevention.
Naturopathic medicine is committed to the creation of a healthy world in which humanity may thrive.

With some help of Sunlight Natural Health, and Dr. Janene Martin, we’ve included some important points that all Naturopathic physicians wish their patients would know and remember:

  • You are not your disease.
  • You have arrived at your state of health through many unique factors that your body may be expressing as a particular diagnosis.
  • Naturopathic medicine is a model of healthcare in which treatment is focused on disease prevention and on supporting the body’s natural abilities to heal.
  • The least invasive and most holistic modalities are the first choice.
  • The ultimate goal and focus of treatment is to successfully identify and treat the cause of the disease rather than suppressing the body’s symptoms, which are signs of disharmony and not the disease itself.

So now that we know what Naturopathic Medicine is, what exactly does a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) do?

The span of what an ND can do for you includes:

  • Preventative medicine
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Prescription drugs (no DEA scheduled drugs except testosterone)
  • Botanical medicine
  • Homeopathic medicine
  • Physical medicine (no grade IV manipulations)
  • Traditional Chinese medicine including acupuncture
  • Minor surgery
  • IV therapy intervention

Many NDs work in a clinical environment known as ‘integrative’ where they can meet with their patients and provide the best of conventional, alternative and naturopathic worlds.

Did you know in the state of Utah, a ND is licensed to provide primary care?

At the bottom of this post, I’ve also included a list of the treatments that Dr. Malus offers in our clinic!

Wow, NDs can do a lot! And we know that some of those practices sound pretty intense. But don’t you worry, ND’s go through tons of training to get to where they are.

How are Naturopathic Physicians trained?

According to the AANP, a licensed ND has to complete pre-medicine university training after which they attend a 4-year, graduate-level naturopathic medical school. They are trained in all the same basic sciences as an MD, but also study holistic and nontoxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness.

NDs also study:

  • clinical nutrition
  • homeopathic medicine
  • botanical medicine
  • psychology and counseling

Rigorous professional board exams are taken so that NDs may be licensed by a state or provincial jurisdiction as a primary care general practice physician.

There are also further certifications that an ND can acquire if he or she wishes to:

  • prescribe drugs
  • administer IV therapies
  • perform injections into joint capsules (prolotherapy)
  • other bio-oxidative medicine therapies

High Dose IV Vitamin C………………………………………………………$180

Research shows that intravenous vitamin C at high doses kills cancer cells in the early stages of cancer by having a pro-oxidant peroxide effect which kills cancer cells while sparing functional immune cells. For those in the later stages of cancer, the intravenous vitamin C protocol may improve quality of life. Research has shown that using the Vitamin C concurrently with chemotherapy or radiation will not decrease the effectiveness of these treatments. Research has also shown that IV Vitamin C seems to augment the effectiveness of chemotherapy or radiation.
