If you haven’t heard the news yet, Hypnotherapy and Hypnobirthing are now here at Cutting Edge! If you want to read up on Hypnotherapy, check out our recent blog post Jolene Shields, Certified Hypnotherapist. But this post is specifically about the other service Jolene provides, Hypnobirthing!
Jolene is going to give us (with help from her brochure and website, along with the Hypnobirthing website) the lowdown on what Hypnobirthing is all about.
So, to start off, let’s break down the hypnosis of Hypnobirthing:
Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration, a state of mind and body in which we communicate suggestions to our subconscious mind. The subconscious part of out mind influences what we thing, how we feel, and the choices we make. It also controls out response to pain sensations. There is no magic to achieving success with self-hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses to can reach deep relaxation and redirected focus.
When having your baby with Hypnobirthing, you will experience a mental state similar to daydreaming or the enhanced focus that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or staring at a fire. You will be conversant and in good spirits, yet totally relaxed and fully in control. You will be aware of your body’s contractions but able to determine the extent to which you feel them. Your body’s natural anesthesia, endorphins, will replace the stress hormones that create pain. And you, your companion and your baby will experience your birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation, without fear and tension that cause pain. When it is time for your baby to be born, you will be fully awake and involved and ready to bond in love and joy.
What is Hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing is a unique method of Childbirth education, which is enhanced by hypnosis, imagery and relaxation techniques. This method wonderfully complements traditional health care.
Hypnobirthing is a simple, straight-forward program. Thoughtfully developed over the years to remind mothers of the simplicity of birth itself. Just as the majority of birthing women do not need interventions and procedures for a safe and healthy birth, they do not need a complex set of exercises and scripts to prepare themselves for a peaceful, calm and comfortable birthing. The birthing body and baby know just what to do. HypnoBirthing is designed to teach women to trust in nature’s way of birth and to relax and let their bodies do what is needed. By practicing a few key techniques, mothers can program their minds and condition their bodies to birth easily. When it comes to programming and conditioning for birth preparation, variety is not necessarily a good thing. It is the repetition of practice that produces great results.
- Emphasis placed on both pregnancy and childbirth
- Eliminates the Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome before, during and after birthing
- Shortens the first stage of labor by several hours
- Eliminates or greatly reduces the need for chemical painkillers
- More rapid postnatal recovery
- Returns birthing to the beautiful, peaceful experience nature intended
- Creates a more integral role for the birthing companion
- Learn how to use your body’s own natural numbing chemicals – endorphins. Endorphins are 200 times stronger than I.V. morphine
With the calm state of hypnosis, your body’s natural anesthesia, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that can cause pain during birth. Moms state that “they produced their own natural epidural”, when using the HypnoBirthing techniques.
Some facts about HypnoBirthing Mothers and how they are making choices and creating change:
- Only 17% of HypnoBirthing mothers birthed via C-Section compared to the National Average of 32%.
- 9.5% of HypnoBirthing mothers choose to birth in the comfort of their own homes or Birth Centers. The national average is less than 1% for home births.
- Only 23% of HypnoBirthing mothers birthing vaginally had epidural anesthesia compared to the national average of 71%.
